This conference will explore the ecumenical impact of Receptive Ecumenism and its potential to shape the various imaginaries within the churches. Receptive Ecumenism, which has been described as a fresh way of engaging in the work of Christian unity, invites Christian communions to consider not what they can teach others, but what they might learn from their ecumenical partners and how this learning can contribute to their own growth, holiness, and maturation. By connecting this receptive ecumenical approach with the ecclesial imaginary, we will explore the underlying assumptions held by Christian communions of what the church is and should be. We will also consider the impact, potential, and unique opportunities that Receptive Ecumenism offers the ecumenical movement in shaping ecclesial imaginaries towards faithful transformation and deeper unity.

Throughout this conference, we will explore the connection between the ecclesial imaginary and Receptive Ecumenism with scholars, church leaders, and ministry practitioners. Workshops will also be provided to help apply the critical learning from the numerous plenary and panel discussions to one’s ministry context.

Intentional conversations will be fostered between participants and communions so as to prayerfully and creatively consider how Receptive Ecumenism might foster deeper points of connection between the churches—to listen together to the Holy Spirit through the life of another communion, and to begin to see other Christians, not as competition or strangers, but as fellow pilgrims on the journey with Christ.
